Anthony Stones
1934 - 2016
Anthony Stones was born in England and moved to New Zealand with his parents at the age of 18. He worked in television at Auckland’s AKTV from 1963 and was TV2’s head of design until 1983 when he returned to the UK. Off-screen Stones was a painter, editor, author and teacher. His public sculptures include Prime Minister Peter Fraser, Jean Batten at Auckland Airport, Captain Cook in Gisborne,and General Lord Freyberg in Freyberg Square, Auckland.
Stones settled in Oxford and became a notable portrait sculptor, children’s book author and illustrator. He was also a visiting professor at Nanjing and Qinghua Universities. In 2011 a sculpture garden was named in his honour at Shenyang University where he was Dean of the Anthony Stones International Sculpture Academy.
