Patrick Hamilton Graham

1879 - 1948

Patrick Graham was born in Gisborne and studied architecture at the Wellington Technical School. He worked in Wellington from 1903 – 1906 before returning to Gisborne where he remained until WWI. He enlisted in 1917 and spent some time after demobilisation in London studying town planning at University College. The second Wellington period of Graham’s career was from 1920 – 1940. He worked as a “Government Housing Expert” for the Housing Branch of the Department of Labour and drew up plans for idealised workers’ housing estates. He later set up his own practice, mainly designing high-specification houses. In 1940 the family moved to Havelock North.
